Some of the most important and most frequently used code ever is maintained by unpaid devs doing it because they want to give back to the community. I have tried to contribute to packages I use regularly when I spot a bug. Some examples include:

winston-cloudwatch

This package is an extension of the popular logging framework winston to support logging to AWS Cloudwatch
  • I detected an issue that user-provided credentials were not loading correctly, therefore the secondary authentication method (AWS config) was being used instead. My fix allows user-provided credentials to work by changing the credentials object nesting to match what AWS JS SDK expected.

Ajv

Ajv generates code to turn JSON Schemas into super-fast validation functions that are efficient for V8 optimization
  • When converting to strings, the `safeStringify` function did not correctly handle an undefined input. Instead, it threw an error. My fix allowed it to continue successfully.

url-composer

Small lib for parsing and building dynamic URLs
  • If a parameter in the URL replacement object was undefined, it removed the parameter instead of failing to encode the URL.
